Monday morning meanderings. Vol. 39

Sayre, OK

After some really beautiful days, it has turned cold and some much needed rain is on the way.  This is the storm season and so we are wondering how we will do with the really big winds and the hail that is part of this time of year.  Thunderstorms, tornados and big hail are not uncommon in Oklahoma and since we have never been around anything like that, especially living in a fifth wheel, it is a bit disconcerting.

Item one.  We have been casually looking for some property to buy here in the area.  Something with a barn or a place to build one where we could get the trailer under some kind of shelter from the hail and have a wind break.  We would still live in the trailer as we like the lifestyle and we are not here year round, but we need a little protection from the weather here.  Something new to us is the auctioning of property rather than listing and waiting for a deal to come by.  The time of the auction is advertised around the area, with the description and time of the auction and then people gather at the appointed time and bid on the real property and/or the personal property.  We have participated in two such auctions so far, one we were the only bidder but the minimum was not reached so it didn’t sell and this morning we went to another auction with our friends Cody and Stacey Custer.  There were two parcels, one 15 acres with a barn and another adjacent property of 35 acres of fenced grazing land.  We had a price we were willing to go to per acre and we were in the running right to the end but we had prayed about our price and believed we had heard what we were to do and when we went by that figure we dropped out.  So we are 0-2 on auctions but we are having fun!

Item two.  This is the first year we have been following American Idol with consistency.  I have watched it here and there but never with the interest we have this year.  It is fun and good entertainment.  I like seeing young people who have passion for something and seeing them grow into their talent each week is enjoyable.  Here is my list of the final eight and the order I think they will be eliminated.  Kristy: She is due to exit.  I like her but she has peaked.  Jason: He is also on the short list to be eliminated.  He just doesn’t have the passion for it. Michael:  I like him and think he will probably do fine post-Idol but his talent is in the bottom three. David A:  He is such a nice kid and has some real talent.  I love the way he brings his passion to his songs but I don’t think he is going to be a big star.  Brooke:  I feel the same about her as I do David.  She is so sweet and pretty and seems to be the most mature person in the group but she isn’t headed to stardom.  She is Carrie Underwood without her voice.  Carley:  She is very good and may win it all, but the whole tattoo thing and the fact that she has already done a record deal that flopped makes me not see her as the fresh face that AI seems to be about.  But watch out, she might be the new face of AI.  David C: No one has grown more, nor handled the different musical styles like David.  He is strong, talented and can bring it every night.  He will be in the top two.  Syesha: I wouldn’t bet on her to win it all but I think in terms of vocal ability, looks, personality and a talent that maturing every week, she is what American Idol is about.  She and David C will duke it out for the title.

Anyone else want to post a different order?

Item three.  Linda is leaving on Wednesday for Washington.  She will see Brad, Summer and Canyon and then spend some good time with Leslee and Bill. The anniversary of their son Willie’s death is Monday and we wanted at least one of us to be with them for that.  These “firsts” are really hard: first Christmas, first birthday, first boating season, first birthday of a nephew and on and on to the first anniversary, they all amp up the pain a little more.  Over time they seem to lessen in intensity but birthday and death day are always hard.  It would be nice to be there but we will be out the end of the month so I will wait for that.

Item four. And now there are two.  The NCAA mens tournament is down to the final two and it should be an up tempo, rocking game.  Both my picks are gone, long gone, but I like these two a lot.  Memphis looks strong enough to win it all.  I watched some of the women’s final four too and felt really bad for LSU.  They had it and…  Tennessee/Stanford.  If you like the women’s game it will be a good one.  What a great game that was!  Our neighbor to the North pulled it off.  Yeah, Jayhawks.

Item five.  Ever wonder where your will power goes at the times when you most need it?  Psychologist Roy Baumeister and others have found that people who successfully accomplish one task requiring self-control are less persistent on a second, seemingly unrelated task.   I guess this means that you only have a limited amount of willpower so you have to be careful how you use it.  The good news is by working at it you can increase your willpower so you have a deeper supply when you need it.  This is an interesting study that has some implications for those who want to follow Kingdom principles.  Read the New York Times article here.

Item six.  There is no Item six.

Have an excellent week.  Send me your Idol picks!

I have no Idol predictions but as for hoops I follow that closely. I think Kansas will win because they have better inside scoring than Memphis. The guards for Memphis are slightly more talented, but legs will be a factor, it is hard to hit long range jumpers with tired legs.
